The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express card now carries a $650 annual fee. Before you decide whether to keep it, it’s worth calling Amex to ask for a retention offer — I’ve been offered 65,000 Bonvoy points (about $520 in value) just for asking. Here’s how it works and what to expect.
How to ask for a retention offer
- Wait until the $650 annual fee posts to your statement (you have about 30 days after that to cancel for a full refund, so there’s no rush).
- Call the number on the back of your card, or Amex’s retention line, and ask to speak with someone about your account.
- Say the annual fee is high and you’re deciding whether to keep the card — is there anything they can do?
- If the first agent has nothing, thank them and try again in a few days. Offers are targeted and can appear or change.
Typical retention offers on this card run from a statement credit of $100–$200 to a bonus of 40,000–65,000 Bonvoy points, sometimes tied to a small spending requirement. There’s no guarantee — some calls produce nothing — but it costs you five minutes.
| Retention offer reported | Rough value |
|---|---|
| Statement credit | $100–$200 |
| Bonus Bonvoy points | 40,000–65,000 points (about $320–$520), sometimes with a small spend requirement |
| No offer | $0 — thank them and try again in a few days |
Is the card worth keeping without an offer?
For a lot of people, yes — the recurring benefits more than cover the $650 fee if you use them:
- Annual free night award after your renewal month, good for a room costing up to 85,000 Bonvoy points (and you can top it off with up to 25,000 points from your account for a room up to 110,000).
- $300 annual dining credit as statement credits at restaurants.
- Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status plus 25 elite-night credits each year.
- Priority Pass Select airport lounge membership.
- $85 TSA PreCheck or $120 Global Entry credit every 4–4.5 years.
| Recurring benefit | Notes | Approx. annual value |
|---|---|---|
| Annual free night award (up to 85,000 points) | Posts after your renewal month; top off with up to 25,000 points from your account | $400–$650+ |
| $300 dining credit | Monthly statement credits at restaurants | Up to $300 |
| Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite + 25 elite-night credits | Suite upgrades when available, lounge access, 4pm checkout | Varies by usage |
| Priority Pass Select | Airport lounge membership | ~$100–$200 |
| TSA PreCheck / Global Entry credit | Once every 4–4.5 years | ~$20/yr |
| Annual fee | −$650 |
The free night alone often exceeds $650 in value at a decent Marriott, and the dining credit is easy to use. If you rarely stay at Marriott properties, that math flips — and that’s exactly when a retention offer, or downgrading to a no-fee Bonvoy card, makes sense.
FAQ
Will I always get a retention offer?
No. Offers are targeted. If you don’t get one, you can still cancel within about 30 days of the fee posting for a full refund, or product-change to a no-fee Bonvoy card.
Does asking hurt my account?
No. A retention call is a normal customer-service request and doesn’t ding your credit or flag your account.
When’s the best time to call?
Right after the annual fee posts, while you still have the cancellation window as leverage.
