The Mileage Plus X app is a great app that acts like a shopping portal by letting you buy gift cards and earn United miles. 

Within the app there is a feature called Visa Rewards.   This is activated by adding a United Visa card to your account. 

Visa Rewards is currently running a promotion that let’s you earn bonus miles for making up to 5 purchases at select merchants.  5 purchases will earn you 10,000 points. 

The way I earned my bonus points was as follows:

Sears – $2 donation to St. Judes

HSN – $2 donation to St. Judes

Barnes and Noble – $2.12 e-book purchase

Gamestop – $2 donation to Make-a-Wish

Jersey Mike’s – $2.34 soda

The only in-person purchase was Jersey Mike’s.  The rest were made online.  Also, for some reason, a $2 online donation to St. Judes through the Chilis website did not trigger the bonus.  I’m not sure why.

So for a total of $10.46, I not only earned points 107 United Miles from the bonuses for shopping through Visa Rewards and 10 miles for charging to my United Visa, but also 10,000 bonus miles.  Additionally, $6 of this went to charity. 

I call that an excellent return.
