What to Do if You are Booked on Spirit Airlines

There’s a strong possibility Spirit Airlines will be shutting down. Here is what you can do if you are booked on Spirit Airlines.

  • Proactively prepare and book yourself an alternate flight with another airline. If you pay for a new ticket, you have 24 hours to cancel and get a refund. If Spirit stays in business within 24 hours, cancel your new ticket. You can then rebook another one if you like, and keep doing this every day. If Spirit closes down, at least then you are covered and have a new flight. If you book a ticket on another airline and use that airline’s miles, most programs offer a full refund of the miles if you need to cancel.

I would do this sooner rather than later, as there will be a mad rush for alternate flights if Spirit shuts down.
  • If Spirit shuts down and you paid for your ticket on a credit card, you should be protected by your credit card issuer. If you paid in cash and Spirit goes bankrupt and shuts down, you will have to file a claim to recover any of your money.
  • If Spirit shuts down, you will most likely lose any miles you have in the Free Spirit frequent flyer program unless the airline merges with another airline. Then, you may get some type of conversion of points into the other airline’s program.

My best advice is to be proactive in making alternative travel arrangements if you’re booked on Spirit Airlines.
