On Saturday, Spirit Airlines shut down, leaving many travelers stranded as well as leaving many travelers with future travel in limbo. Here are what should be your next steps if you were booked on Spirit Airlines:
- If you were scheduled to fly Spirit Airlines in the next two weeks, many airlines are capping their airfares for you if you rebook with them. You will most likely need to provide proof of a paid reservation with Spirit.
- Start looking for alternate flights yourself. As Spirit is no longer taking calls, you are on your own to rebook yourself. To get the full list of flights to where you want to go, start with Google Flights and run a search. You can even book a new flight directly through Google Flights if you like.
- If you paid for your Spirit Airlines flights on a credit card, you will get a refund. Start off by disputing the charge with your credit card company. You will be issued a temporary credit. Eventually, the credit should become permanent.
- If you paid for your Spirit Airlines ticket in cash, you may have to file a claim in bankruptcy court when that becomes available.
- In general, due to rising fuel costs, airfares are high. This may cause sticker shock if you are trying to rebook your ticket. Now may be the time to use up those frequent flier miles you have on other airlines.
Unfortunately, this is a challenging situation for many people. If you need any assistance with the next steps if you were booked on Spirit Airlines, please reach out to me. I am happy to assist.
