Using Amex Platinum airline credits on Frontier Airlines

January 3, 2020|Frontier

Happy New Year!  One of the good things about a new year is that the annual Amex Platinum card airline credit resets to $200.  This means cardholders now have $200 to spend on airline incidentals in 2020.

Both the American Express personal and business Platinum cards come with the $200 airline fee credit.  The catch is that it can not be used for airfare.   The credit is good for food and drinks, change fees, baggage fees, seat selection fees, as well as wifi sometimes.

What I’ve found is that the credit also works for the $59.99 annual fee for the Frontier Airlines Discount Den.   The Discount Den gives you access to lower airfares for you plus several others traveling with you for a year.

In order to use the Amex credit, you must first pick an airline.   All of your credit for the year must be used on one airline.  You can choose the airline on the Amex website, or via phone call.  So for this example, choose Frontier.   You should purchase the Discount Den membership prior to purchasing your plane ticket, as it must appear as a separate credit card charge.   A few days later, you will see a credit on your Amex statement for the $59.99.

As Frontier is a discount airline, you need to pay for seat selection, carry-on baggage, checked baggage, and food/drinks.   All of these can go towards the credit.

Side note, Frontier just started flying to/from Newark with more routes being added.  They also fly to Trenton and Philadelphia, as an option to the NYC airports.

What other successes have you had with the Amex travel credit?
