September 8, 2021|Chase, Hyatt

by Eric Lipkind
As has been widely published, Chase has a so-called 5/24 rule whereby if you have gotten 5 new credit cards in the last 24 months across ALL lenders, you will not get approved for a Chase credit card. Or, so I thought…
Yesterday I applied for the World of Hyatt card. It had a nice 60,000 point sign-up bonus as well as the current fast-track to Globalist status offer. According to my credit report, I have added two cards in the last 24 months. I had also been added as an authorized user on some of my wife’s AMEX cards. When I applied, the message said more review was needed. I then called the Chase reconsideration line at 1-888-270-2127. The agent on the phone said that the authorized user cards would not count towards the 5/24. She then said, I had opened four Chase Business cards in the last 24 months and that put me over the 5 cards. I told the agent that I did not believe the business cards count towards 5/24. She insisted they did. She couldn’t give me an answer on how I was approved for a card two months ago when the number of cards was still over 5/24 per her rules. So, I was denied.
Today, I figured I would try again. I called the reconsideration line. The agent said he saw the notes from yesterday and I was denied. He too said that business cards count towards 5/24. I asked if this was something new and he said no. I then asked if he could tell me when the business cards were opened so I could tell when some would fall off of the 24-month window. After some checking, he came back and said he was now told business cards don’t count towards the 5/24 rule. I was approved. He just needed to move some available credit from one of my Chase Freedom cards.
This just reinforces the HUCA rule (hang up and call again).
What has been your recent experience with the Chase 5/24 rule?
